Pip: Dr Jorge’s World is not your average corner of the internet — where else do you get international law, neuroscience, and a twelve-step programme for governing your own soul, all before lunch?
Mara: Today we’re covering work by Dr Jorge E. Núñez on personal sovereignty — what it means to hold your own centre during a crisis, and how to weather the emotional storms that come with it.
Pip: Let’s start with the foundations — what sovereignty actually demands of you.
The Twelve Laws: What Personal Sovereignty Really Requires
Mara: The central question here is deceptively simple: when the ground dissolves beneath you — crisis, rupture, loss — what does it actually take to govern yourself rather than be governed by the chaos?
Pip: And the answer, it turns out, is not a motivational poster. The post “Las 12 Leyes de la Soberanía Personal” frames this directly: “La verdadera libertad no consiste en simular una fortaleza rígida e invulnerable que escape del sentir, sino en aprender a gobernar el propio timón en mitad del oleaje.”
Mara: So the upshot is that resilience here is not armour — it is navigation. You feel the wave; you steer through it.
Pip: Which is a meaningful distinction, because most self-help tells you to build higher walls. This framework says the walls are the problem.
Mara: The twelve laws are organised around four essential spheres — Reason, Emotion, Body, and Spirit — and the first law, developed at length in “Ley 1 de la Soberanía Personal,” makes a precise logical claim: each sphere is a necessary condition for sovereignty, but none is sufficient on its own.
Pip: Meaning you cannot think your way through grief, or run your way through it, or meditate your way past it — you need all four working together.
Mara: Exactly. The post uses a striking parallel: a state that tries to govern through one dimension alone — pure military force, or pure legal formalism — ends up in chronic conflict. The same happens internally when one sphere monopolises the system.
Pip: So the person who overworks to avoid feeling is not disciplined — they are running a failed state. That is the least flattering mirror I have encountered in a productivity framework.
Mara: The post is quite precise about the clinical consequences. Hyper-intellectualising produces somatic disconnection. Hyper-emotionalising leads to retraumatisation. Over-mobilising the body causes adrenal collapse. Spiritual bypass — reaching for elevation without doing the emotional groundwork — builds, as it puts it, castles in the air.
Mara: The remaining laws — including the distinction between factual solitude and the feeling of loneliness, the concept of the “lead life-raft” as a form of self-evasion, and the mirror of compulsive repetition — all depend on this first integration holding.
Pip: What this means in practice is that the twelve laws are not a menu. They are a sequence, and this is the door.
Mara: From that foundation, the next law turns to something more immediate — how to actually be with an emotion when it arrives.
Sitting With the Storm: Emotions as Weather
Mara: “Ley 2 de la Soberanía Personal” offers a precise image for emotional self-governance: “El soberano acepta el temporal, llora si es necesario, sabiendo que él es el firmamento estable que permanece mientras la tormenta pasa.”
Pip: The distinction matters — you are the sky, not the cloud. Identifying completely with the emotion turns something transient into a permanent identity.
Mara: And the law is equally clear on what this is not: it is not stoic suppression, and it is not unfiltered expression. The sovereign observes the cloud, names it, lets it move — and trusts it will pass.
Pip: Right — and here the framework loops back to Law 1. Without all four spheres integrated, this contemplation collapses into one of its counterfeits.
Mara: What holds these ideas together is the insistence that sovereignty — personal or political — is never a single-axis achievement.
Pip: Govern the complex territory, or it governs you. More laws to come — we’ll be back when the next one lands.
